Learn how to manage those curls with these maintenance tips and curly hairstyles from Daisy Mendoza. I didn’t learn how to deal/manage or maintain my mane properly until my early 20’s, and believe me I made a lot of mistakes along the way.
As a child my dad would brush my hair while it was dry, which resulted in a constant halo of fluff. I remember going to school and my third grade classmates would laugh and say, “Mr. Canan, we cannot see with that big poof on Daisy’s head.” It was horrible and I couldn’t wait until my dad let go of the reins on my hairbrush and let me take matters into my own hands. Well when he did, it didn’t work out so well for me. It turns out I was seriously tender headed and I stopped brushing my hair all together and that was the worst mistake of my LIFE! As you can imagine my hair had so many mats there was no possible way for me to even fathom getting a hair brush through it, so my mom was forced to cut all off. I went to school the next day looking like a little boy. From that point on I made a vow to myself to always brush and to take better care of my hair, the only problem was I didn’t know how.
In middle school, I tried to tame my mane with every gel and pomade I could find. The result = slicked down yet still fluffy ugly mess. In high school, I discovered I could straighten my hair with a curly iron. The result = crimped, grease almost straight, but a hot mess. By college I was straightening my hair every day. The result = straight hair, but it ruined my curls. Finally, my senior year of college as finals started piling up I stopped straightening my hair as much and I learned how to manage my curls. I watched videos, read blogs, and learned the importance of a good leave in conditioner and slowly but surely I began to love my curls. I was no longer trying to tame my mane, but just accepting it and working to perfect it! Was it hard? Yes! Did it happen overnight? No!
