#OperationWatchMeLearn 2016 – The Abyssinian Baptist Church Mattie Fletcher Powell-Satellite Ministry together with Meshae Studios held their second annual school supply drive on September 11, 2016.
There are many families in our community who struggle to provide their children with school supplies needed to help children succeed. Sometimes the only difference between an A+ student and a failing student is having the basic supplies to do homework and participate in class. At Meshae Studios, we recognize that need and feel that we are called to help these families by providing their children with the tools they will need to have a great school year. We love our community and our goal is to make a difference in the lives of those who live in it.
This year we raised $1,450 dollars and we were able to give 300 needy youth in Harlem book bags filled with supplies. One family who I personally encountered left a mark on my heart.
The day before the drive, I came across a single mother and daughter in Staples. As I shopped, I noticed them off to the side calculating their expenses. Something in me told me to reach out. I didn’t know them, but I took a chance. As the little girl passed me to put back a box of pens, I asked to speak to her and her mother.
“Girl, you don’t need to be up in here wasting your money. We are having a Back to School Drive at my church’s festival tomorrow. Why don’t you come by?” I explained to them… well something like that (lol).
The day of the drive they both came out and explained to me how much I actually helped them by stopping them in the store. See, what I didn’t know then was that this family lives in a shelter and the mother only gets one check a month. They are desperately looking for housing and when I approached them they were going to use their grocery money to buy supplies.
Overcome with empathy, I put aside a special bag for the daughter with LOADS of essentials: pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, everything.
“Thank you, I haven’t seen my daughter’s smile in months,” the mother said with embrace. I looked over and saw her daughter dancing and laughing while enjoying cotton candy. My heart was melting.
It was then I realized that this humble family made all the hard work, long hours, and stress disappear. God puts you in places and introduces you to people for a reason. I knew this already, but I really needed the reminder.
We would be remiss if we didn’t thank Friends of Public School Harlem for their huge donation of book bags and supplies.
